Furniture Casters

Furniture casters are the small-diameter end of the Sumatic range: 1 to 3 inch wheels with load ratings from 10kg to 65kg, built for upholstered furniture, storage boxes, nightstands, office chairs and light home or contract furniture. The forks come from the 01 and 011 series families, in swivel and rigid, with top plate or threaded stem mounts.

At this size class the load calculation is simple but still worth doing: divide the loaded weight of the piece by four, apply a 2.5 safety factor for swivel casters on hard floors, and pick the smallest wheel that clears the result. A 40kg upholstered armchair needs a 25kg-rated wheel; a 120kg wardrobe on eight casters can run on 10-15kg units.

Wheel material is chosen for the floor the furniture will live on. PVC is the quietest option and the first choice for hardwood, laminate and tile in homes; PU wheels suit contract furniture and offices where abrasion resistance matters; TPR gives a soft, floor-friendly roll for mixed residential surfaces; PA-Nylon wheels handle heavier dressers and storage units where the load is at the top of this line. All four compounds are available in black, grey or off-white to match the furniture finish.

Mounting follows the furniture construction. Top plate casters with 2 or 4 holes are standard on upholstered bases and wooden frames; threaded stem casters (M6-M10) fit storage boxes, office furniture and cast metal frames where tapped holes exist. A typical furniture fitting pairs two swivel and two rigid casters so the piece tracks straight when pushed.

Because Sumatic produces the forks, bearings and wheels in one factory, furniture programmes get one supplier across sizes and compounds, with custom finishes (matte black, nickel, white) and custom wheel colours for brand work. Small-diameter casters are also where custom tooling cost is lowest, so a bespoke fork for a furniture collection is usually economical from the first order.
