Furniture casters are engineered to move heavy upholstered pieces, beds, wardrobes and storage units without scratching floors or producing noise. Choosing the right furniture caster comes down to three parameters. First, calculate the load: divide the loaded weight of the piece by four and apply a safety factor of 2.5 for swivel casters on hard floors. A queen bed at 60kg needs roughly a 40kg-rated wheel per corner. Second, pick the wheel material. PVC wheels are the quietest and best for hardwood and laminate; TPR gives a softer, floor-friendly roll for home use; rubber suits mixed surfaces and heavier dressers. Third, choose the mounting: top plate casters bolt to pre-drilled holes, while threaded stem casters screw into tapped holes on frames and storage boxes.

Wheel size affects manoeuvrability more than load. Smaller 1-2 inch casters turn tightly and are ideal for light nightstands and office furniture; 4-8 inch casters roll over thresholds and floor seams more easily on armchairs, beds and large wardrobes. Rigid (fixed) casters keep the furniture tracking straight, so a typical fitting pairs two rigid and two swivel units.
